About

ABOUT
Welcome to AOA... Founded in 2001 by THH70, AOA is a visual arts collective that bands together a juried selection of alternative talent. Each AOA artist has signed, sealed and delivered a definitive style that is truly boundless and distinctive. As a collective, AOA has tested the limits of modern culture and defined new standards for the world of visual arts.

Every artist associated with AOA has been hand-picked or has gone through a review process to ensure both art and ethics share the organization's "common vein". The result is the ultimate "win-win": our collectors benefit from high service standards and quality alternative artwork... we benefit by strengthing our presence and gaining exposure with untapped audiences.

We want to raise eyebrows. We want to redefine the standards of visual art. We want to win our ongoing battle against fluffy kitten paintings.

We invite you as a collector to immerse yourself in the talented alternative artists that are part of the AOA experience.

We invite you as an artist to submit your work to become a part of an online art revolution.

thh70

thh70

Though the man who inhabits THH70's identity was born in 1970, but inspired by George Lucas's "THX-1138", the identity of this multimedia artist and creator of AOA was officially born in 1995. Having painted off and on during the 90's but emerging as a full-time artist in 2000, THH70's paintings are born of the basic, primal urge of metropolitan aesthetics. Influenced by artists Cy Twombly, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Rauschenberg and William S. Burroughs, THH70 creates messages with stencils, spray paint, household chemicals and scrawl, layered on crude but painterly ground. Reoccurring messages in the work of THH70 accredit '70's and '80's pop culture, drug references and a modern-day spin on words and phrases, but the work as a whole takes form of stream-of-consciousness as it hits the canvas.

Having sold over 900 paintings since the coronation of his art career in 2000, his paintings hang in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, Asia and Europe. After leaving his lifelong home of Los Angeles, California in October 2007, THH70 currently resides in Dallas, Texas. For more detailed biographical information, please visit the official THH70 website and MySpace pages located in the links below.

nix TOXIC

nIX TOXIC

Born both an artist and scientist, Nix has been creating inventive art forms for nearly 20 years under various aliases.  Past work has included everything from graphic design to visual arts to lighting fixtures to furniture and clothing design.  Throughout the past ten years, the artist has been recognized repeatedly for creating pieces that are innovative, unusual, and striking.

In 2007, Nix chose to stray from the common canvas in an effort to avoid all things ordinary and embrace a combination of fascinations.  The latest use of transparency, light, color, and dimension make Nix's goal of illustrating the imagination a reality and truly embrace the belief that "anything is possible"...

davmo

davmo
I am an American self taught artist, painter. I was born in 1960 in Norfolk, Virginia and currently reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I began painting in 1994 at the age of 34. My work has been featured in numerous art shows, the most notable a solo show in 2007 titled "Crashing Waves & Tidal Forces". The show featured over 50 original works of art that drew a lot of attention to the infant mortality problem in Virginia and also a tribute to my son Alex who died because of medical malpractice.

tim gerst

tim gerst
Whether you call it Contemporary Folk, Outsider, or Raw Art, the form of free-expression largely practiced by self-taught artists like Tim Gerst that was once considered ‘outside the mainstream’ is now quickly becoming a leading American art form. There have always been collectors of eccentric art and artifacts, but as mainstream contemporary art becomes increasingly spiritless, over analyzed and over-hyped -- not to mention overpriced -- works filled with bold imagery and raw passion like those presented here by Gerst are finding a place on to the walls of discriminating people with all levels of income, sophistication and education. His child-like enthusiasm, bold brush strokes, and swashes of vivid color promise to inspire, entice and delight both the beginning or seasoned collector. Tim is a self-described Modern Urban Folk Artist. To some, “folk” conjures images of country crafts, weathervanes, bedspreads or yard ornaments. Of course it can be that, but it can also be art that deals with spiritual isolation, loneliness, as well as humor, joy or political and environmental issues. The truth is that although the art may be eccentric, ‘folk’ often describes contemporary art that has personal relevance for both the artist and viewer. With Tim’s art, people often “feel” it first with their heart before observing it with their mind. They either love it or hate it, but seldom forget it.

ive been working in the digital visual effects industry for over six years as a digital compositor. i was born in, live in, work in and drive through los angeles. to put it simply: after a long hard day of road rage and bad coffee and computer monitors, i come home to work on my own art.

junkykid

junkykid

THE STORY
While attending the Collage of Visual Arts - St. Paul, MN. I began reading a lot of William S. Burroughs and reading the word JUNK and JUNKIE over and over in his books. I also recall a phrase of "being born from junk", hence coining the name JUNKYBOY, the alter-ego of Paul Afong Jr, the strange and wacky side was born. The alter-ego name JUNKYBOY was later changed to JUNKYKID. But it wasn't until a few years later that actual characters began to take form and shape.

THE ARTIST
At times my brain is buzzing with many different ideas, too many at times to do them all...well, only time will tell. Lately, I've been taking on a few other challenges to expand my creativity and exploration. I've experimented on placing my images on several different found or collected objects. Inspired greatly by Barry McGee (aka TWIST), Phil Frost and many other artists. Always, seeking the next inspirational artist or piece to fuel my work. I feel my work will continue to grow and evolve. After all JUNK is all around us to use and transform, but it's how you use it that makes my art challenging and fun for all to enjoy.

juan carlos noria
[royal]
Somedays it just seems we're living in a corrupt little cartoon world and the two-dimensional stupidity just begs to be countered. Royal is the antithesis of pretension and greed, popping any overly-inflated thought bubbles of our culture that float by.

the Beautiful and Strange
I do not currently and may never fully understand the meanings behind my paintings. They are intuitive. I do know that with every piece I make, I am pushing my mind as far as I can into the unknown to bring back this raw material from as far as I can reach. It may all be my own mental garbage, it may be messages from ancient whales, it may be a mix of both. One thing is certain though, I will continue making more paintings and I am certain I will continue to improve as I go along.

reza kassai

reza kassai

When Reza was a child, his parents noticed he could draw, and began buying him magic markers and colored pencils. To impress them, he would arrange the markers in order of color, from the brightest to darkest. Little did he know, he had most of the colors misplaced. His mom noticed the problem, and took him to an eye-doctor (The opto.........), where he was diagnosed with Red-Green color-blindness. The doctor explained to him that he could be anything he wanted to be, except a pilot, because he may land the plane in the ocean, instead of the runway! That was never an issue, since he never wanted to become a pilot, but always liked to draw, and later started to paint. To this day, his color blindness has not hindered his artistic endeavors. Once in a while he even gets compliments on his color choices. While color-blindness has been a constant, his images would change with time. Today, besides having color, his art has other intentions. Reza paints whatever crosses through his mind. His on-going “ Random Thoughts” series is a life project which takes different directions with the flow of time.

Reza’s work has been on HBO television show “Six Feet Under”; on permanent public display at the UCLA medical center in Los Angeles, on display in California State University Northridge, in galleries, and many private collections worldwide.

charles daniels

charles daniels

“On the surface my paintings appear to be about corporate America, expressed through abstracted/deconstructed men in suits. On another level, I think my paintings are about people, and the fragile nature of the human condition. ”

Born in Portland on August 22, 1965, Charles G. Daniels began working commercially in television and film in 2003. The most notable project to date is a film called Coraline, directed by Henry Selick and scheduled to be released in February 2009.

jeru gabriel

jeru gabriel

A native Texan, Jeremy "Jeru" Gabriel began his pursuit of art as a toddler when he first drew on his wall with his mother's nail polish. Since then he has been a passionate artist applying his abilities in the areas of underground art, graffiti, portraits and graphic design. In 2004 he began participating in numerous art shows and has showed no signs of slowing down, displaying work regularly in his local Dallas/Ft. Worth area as well as California and Northern Ireland.

Rarely sketching out full ideas before painting, Jeru's work is more about the spontaneous creation he experiences in the moment and the visual response by the viewer once the art is complete. Label it however you wish, the end result is a bucket full of brightly colored eye candy created in various mixed mediums including oils, spray paint, acrylics and markers.

lauren gardiner

lauren gardiner

Lauren Gardiner’s tiny paintings are intricate and intimate portraits portraying each subject’s every lash, wart and twangy hair. These characters, whether human, animal or insect, are observations of how people present themselves for prosperity as well as how they react in front of the camera. Her use of ambiguous backgrounds, uncomfortable glares and awkward postures, typical of professional portrait photography, are humorous yet cynical little vignettes that give a brief glimpse into the human condition.

Lauren was born in the U.S., but grew up in Singapore, Australia and England. After graduating in Illustration in 1998 from the Rhode Island School of Design, she moved to Los Angeles where she observes the many aggravating facets of human life that help provide the inspiration for her little portraits and paintings.

dion hitchings

dion hitchings

i was born in saint louis, missouri
my mother found out she was pregnant with me, two weeks after my father’s funeral.
took up drawing at age 3 and never put down the crayons.
i went to washington university in saint louis/school of fine arts,
where I graduated with a bachelor of fine arts.
luckily, i landed one of the only art related jobs in saint louis,
hired as a fashion illustrator at jeans west,
next i moved to chicago,
after being hired at evans furs as an art director.
my next job was for marshall fields department store,
which i stayed at for the next three years.
my next move was new york city,
where i was hired as art director at bloomingdales.
from there i freelanced art directing and illustration,
tired of living in the city i moved to rural new jersey in hunterdon county.
but things changed, within a 4 year period,
i lost my significant other to a car accident,
lived through 9/11 and was laid off my last job.
my priorities changed and what is important shifted.
got a new job in new jersey
i realized i needed to start drawing and painting again
and try to be a full time artist.

when describing my art
you can call it primitive narrative, childlike, colorful,
self-revealing, erotic, funny, strange and lots of eyes.
my inspirations come from many places –
people I see and work with, dreams,
plants at the nursery, news items,
guests on the jerry springer show and nature.
